Atrocity Exhibition is pretty easily my favourite record from Danny Brown, but I've been keeping up since then. His new one, Stardust, dives fully into hyperpop, which is not a surprise if you've kept up with his recent collaborations. Not quite my thing, but I still wanted to see him live. He played Vancouver shortly before I moved there, which would've been a great show coming off of Quaranta. And he actually did a Canadian tour later in 2024, hitting up smaller cities like Ottawa and Halifax, which is wild. So yeah, circumstances have finally lined up for me to see him here in Toronto.
This show was at Rebel, and was supported by underscores. But I want to say it was more of a co-headline, because I was shocked at how much energy the crowd had for underscores. I don't know any of her songs, but people were going nuts. The hyperpop fans definitely showed up.
Danny Brown had good energy too, and I'm glad to report he did play a nice selection of cuts from his back catalog, like "When It Rain" and "Ain't It Funny". And some tracks from his collab album with JPEGMAFIA.
